A Tasting at Lamoreaux and a Fantastic FLX Riesling
This is the last video in the series we recorded in 2021, and it's a bit different from the others.
You'll notice we both look tired. We’d taken a break from filming after Scott was diagnosed with colon cancer that required surgery. By the time we recorded this, he was on the other side of the surgery— but just barely. You can see the weariness on our faces.
I’m glad we recorded it anyway. It marks yet another stop on our journey.
Lamoreaux Landing
Now, on to the wine. We talked about our visit to Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars on the east side of Seneca Lake in Lodi. It’s one of our favorite wineries, with four generations of grape growing on the same land, over 130 acres of estate vineyards, and a Riesling program that's among the best on the lake. The tasting room has incredible views worth savoring.
We opened was the 2018 Red Oak Vineyard Riesling. It had aromas of petrol, white peach, golden apple, and a beautiful mineral finish. Lamoreaux tracks their fruit block by block, and the Red Oak Vineyard bottling is a good example of what that specificity produces in the glass.
Where to Eat
Elf in the Oak in Hector is a bit further south on Route 414. A seasonal spot with handmade sandwiches, soups, and baked goods. Worth the stop.
Johnny's Kitchen in Lodi is a short drive from the winery. Smash burgers, fish and chips, tacos, Sunday brunch — casual, made to order, and consistently good.
That wraps up the 2021 video series. When we recorded this video, we only knew that the recent past had been less than ideal. We had no idea that a year later, in 2022, Scott would start taking winemaking and viticulture classes at FLCC. Now he’s making our wine, and we’ve started a winery! A lot has changed in just a few short years.
