Throwback Tasting: 2018 Hermann J. Wiemer Reserve Dry Riesling

Some of our favorite tasting videos were filmed at the lake house, often featuring a bottle we’d been saving for the right moment. One of the best throwbacks we’ve revisited lately is our tasting of the 2018 Hermann J. Wiemer Reserve Dry Riesling.

We opened it on the deck, and the wine showed beautifully right away. Bright, high acidity that sharpened everything, balanced by generous stone fruits—peach, apricot, that rounded mid-palate that gives structure some softness. The finish was long, clean, and mineral. Classic Wiemer: precise but never austere.

We also recommended heading to FLX Wienery after visiting Wiemer. At the time of the video, we still hadn’t been, but people we trusted kept insisting it was a must-stop. Right now it’s closed for the season, but be sure to add it to your list for next year!

We also discussed a great dinner that we had at one of our favorite Rochester restaurants, Redd. We were there for our anniversary, and drank a delicious bottle of Wiemer’s Magdalena Vineyard Dry Riesling, which is one of our favorites. We also talked about the now-defunct ROC Brewery in Rochester, which closed its doors a few months ago.

And then there was the background soundtrack: a flock of geese hanging out on our shoreline. They honked throughout the tasting as if they were determined to participate!

The wine, the memories, and the geese made for a memorable tasting. The bottle captured the energy and precision of the FLX, and the moment captured why this lake house keeps anchoring our Finger Lakes food and wine journey!
