FLX Flashback: Boundary Breaks Tasting and Seneca Lake (Mostly) Favorites

It’s time for another rewind to 2021 for our wine tasting video series—back when we first started recording our Finger Lakes wine adventures.

This week’s throwback is to Boundary Breaks on Seneca Lake, where we opened a bottle of their 2018 #239 Dry Riesling. If you’ve been to Boundary Breaks, you know their views are some of the best in the region, but in this video, we were on our own deck at the lake house, soaking in that same FLX summer vibe with one of their signature wines.

In the video, we also mention that our daughter Sophia had just been hired to work in the Boundary Breaks tasting room, but hadn’t yet started. Looking back now, it’s wild to realize how much time has passed. She went on to work there for three summers, and today she still balances wine with her studies.

These days, you’ll find her bartending at Main & Vine Wine Bar, tucked into the lower level of the historic DeLand House on Main in Fairport. She just passed her WSET 2 exam, and also works at Century Liquor & Wines, a flagship Wegmans store known for having one of the deepest and best wine selections in Rochester. Between DeLand House and Century, she’s been able to stay rooted in both the hospitality and retail sides of the wine world while finishing her master’s degree in Information and Library Science at SUNY Buffalo (virtually). Graduation is set for spring 2026. And yes, we’re very proud parents!

But enough about Sophie! Let’s get back to the 2021 video, where we also talked about some of our favorite local spots:

  • Dano’s Heuriger on Seneca, which is now transformed into Silver Thread’s Winegarden. Back then, it was schnitzel and Viennese spreads; now it’s Silver Thread’s serene outdoor tasting experience. Either way, a can’t-miss stop.

  • Stonecat Café, which has evolved a bit since our video days, but still makes for a fantastic lunch after a day of wine tasting.

  • Ithaca Farmers Market, where we’d visited on a Sunday, when it’s usually a little less crowded, and came home with a gorgeous flower bouquet (yes, I had to show it off on camera).

  • Lucky Hare Brewing Company, for when you want to trade your Riesling glass for a pint with a view

  • If you’re not in the mood for wine or beer, we also talked about Finger Lakes Cider House, which is right down the road from our lake house.

It’s a lot of fun looking back at these videos now, and seeing how much the FLX food and wine scene has grown, and how many of these places are still part of our regular rotation when we’re up at the lake.

You can watch the full Boundary Breaks flashback video below, and you can watch another video of a fantastic Finger Lakes Dry Riesling, this time from Lucas Vineyards, here.

Cheers from the lake!
